Violence, Disaters and Scandals in the 90's

O.J. Simpson Trial:
O.J. was arrested in June 1994 for and tried in 1995 for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole, and a friend, Ron Goldman on June 12, 1994.
This was a monumental case, not only because of the case itself but the controversy over it.
57 MILLION people watched this case on tv.
Also, there was racial controversy involved aswell. Many black Americans cheered for the non-guilty verdict, while many white Americans believed that a guilty man got away with a crime he obviously committed.

Y2K
People believed that when the world reached the new milennia that technology, esp. computers, would malfunction. The issue got so out of hand and far-fetched that there were rumors about money being stolen from people's bank accounts, the world comming to an end, factories shutting down, lights going out, ect. In the end this all didn't happen, but it caused quite a scare in the 90's.
The Gulf War took place in 1990
Tailhook affair
Navy and Marine Corps fliers were accused of sexually abusing 26 women. 2 Navy Admirals are forced to retire, a 3rd resigns.

Clinton Sex Scandals
President Clinton was accused by many women of sexual misconduct, and was almost impeached because of perjury and obstruction of justice. One of the main women was Monica Lewinsky.

L.A. Riots
1992
    After an all-white jury acquits 4 white L.A. cops in a video beating Rodney King a black motorist, rioting begins in Los Angeles. The riots lasted 3 days, 51 people died, 1,800 people were injured and 3,767 buildings were set ablaze.
Bombing
The World Trade Center ( February 26, 1993) 
A car bomb planted by Islamic Terrorists explodes in the World Trade Center in New York injuring 1,000 people and killing 6.
Murrah Federal building (April 19, 1995)
Orginized by U.S. Army veteran Timothy McVergh who is sentenced to death in 1997. The bomb killed 168 people.
 School Shootings
Between 1996 and 1999 there were 14 school shootings nation wide.
Columbine was the biggest.
On April 20th, 1999 in Littleton Colorado-  14 students, 1 teacher killed. 23 wounded.

Natural Disasters
1991- 70 tornadoes touchdown in the mid and south west. 23 people were killed.
1992- Hurricane Andrew hits Florida. 38 dead, 250000 people homeless because of 85000 destroyed homes.
1993- In the Midwest "The Great Flood of '93" kills 33 people, leaves 70,000 people homeless, and causes $12 BILLION in property damage.
1994- A 6.6-6.8 earthquake hits L.A. leaving 51 dead, 0ver 5,000 injured, and 15,000 homeless. The earthquake caused at least $15 BILLION in damage.
1995- A heat wave in Chicago kills 733 people.
